Meld’s Revolutionary Breakthrough: 100M Tokens Staked in Record Time on Cardano-based DeFi Platform

Cardano’s DeFi story is young, but it is already producing moments worth writing down. In early February 2022, one of those moments belonged to Meld, a lending protocol that had been quietly building for months, and then suddenly could not be described as quiet anymore.

In only three days, Meld, a new decentralized financial system that emerged on the Cardano (ADA) blockchain, managed to stake 100 million of its native currency MELD. Three days. For a protocol that had barely launched, that kind of community response says more than any press release ever could.

💯 100 Million in Three Days

Meld announced the milestone on Twitter, with the achievement contributing to the DeFi protocol’s goal of providing services for staking bitcoin as collateral for fiat loans. Yes, you read that right: the plan is to let people borrow against their Bitcoin, without selling a single coin.

In just 3 days we’ve managed to get 100m $MELD staked in the #MELD protocol! 🥳🤯 You guys are amazing 🚀

🏦 A New Kind of Lending

Meld’s approach requires customers to deposit cryptocurrency that will be locked in the account before borrowing loans backed by Cardano based on the locked collateral. It is a familiar concept in DeFi, collateralized lending, but Meld is doing something different with it: letting Bitcoin holders borrow fiat against their holdings instead of being forced to sell during dips.

Ken Olling, CEO of Meld, explained why the model fits Cardano so naturally:

In the case of Cardano, you do a soft link of the asset from your wallet to the stake pool. So you’re pledging or you’re voting with your tokens. Your tokens always stay or your coins always stay in your wallet, but they’re locked up and they can’t be used for anything else,

That subtle difference matters. Your coins never leave your custody, they just become unavailable for spending while the loan is active. No middleman ever holds your Bitcoin, which is exactly the promise DeFi was built on.

📈 A Crowd-Backed Project

The community response to Meld goes back well before this milestone. Meld permitted token holders to commit over 620 million ADA, almost $1 billion, in order to create the groundwork for the system. As a result, the platform was able to raise $10 million through a private token sale as part of a fundraising round.

Meld also used the ISPO crowdfunding model, a Cardano specialty where staking rewards go to a project instead of the delegator. The first staking pool quickly filled up with 64 million ADA. Within five days, the ISPO had four additional pools opened that filled up with 133 million ADA. That is what real community support looks like in numbers.

Users will be able to choose between a six-month lock or a 12-month lock, with a 12 percent and a 15 percent annual percentage rate, respectively. The longer you commit, the more the protocol pays you for your patience.

🔗 Bridges and Partnerships

Meld is not building in isolation. The project has worked with Tingo, an African mobile operator, to incorporate the app, which fits the stated goal of reaching the world’s unbanked while depending on Cardano to target nations with a large crypto population. In addition, the DeFi protocol is collaborating with Polygon, Vent Finance, and ADAmatic to link the Polygon and Cardano blockchains.

Bridges between networks, partnerships with mobile operators, and a lending product aimed at people traditional finance left behind. That is not a meme coin roadmap; that is an infrastructure play.

🧠 Final Thoughts

Staking 100 million tokens in three days is a loud signal, but the quieter numbers underneath are just as impressive: a billion dollars in committed ADA, millions raised early, and pools filling in days instead of months. Whether Meld delivers on its ambitious lending vision is a question for the future, but it has already proven one thing: Cardano’s community will show up when the product is real.

As always, do your own research before staking anything. Lockups mean your funds stay with the protocol for months, no matter what the market does. Thanks for reading.
