Every January, the predictions arrive: the price targets, the trend calls, the “this year will be different” speeches. Most of them are noise. But when the CEO of the company building one of the fastest growing blockchains puts a number on the table, it is worth at least reading the reasoning.
In 2022, John Wu, the CEO of Ava Labs, a blockchain business that creates the software for the Avalanche (AVAX) blockchain, offered a lot of fascinating forecasts for the cryptocurrency industry. The most eye catching: the entire crypto market cap doubles to $5 trillion.
🏔️ The Avalanche Pitch
Wu began by presenting Avalanche in an interview with Kelly Evans, anchor of CNBC’s “The Exchange,” on December 31, 2021:
Avalanche is the fastest blockchain. It’s Ethereum compatible and it’s the fastest growing blockchain based on usage.
Two claims, both worth unpacking. “Ethereum compatible” means developers who already build on Ethereum can port their applications to Avalanche without learning a new ecosystem, which lowers the switching cost to nearly zero. And “fastest growing based on usage” is the claim the numbers backed up at the time: Avalanche’s DeFi ecosystem had grown explosively through late 2021.
📊 ETH vs BTC: A 500% Story
After that, Wu was pressed to explain why Ethereum has outperformed Bitcoin in 2021, and here’s what he had to say:
Oh yeah. From a price action perspective, sure. And from a usage perspective. I mean Bitcoin was up 65% and I think Ethereum was up 500%. So, yes, from that perspective and market dominance, Ethereum definitely grew, but that’s because there was more usage there on Ethereum.
The gap he describes is the whole story of 2021 in one sentence. Bitcoin, the store of value, up roughly 65 percent. Ethereum, the application layer, up roughly 500 percent. Same market, wildly different returns, because one is a vault and the other is a city, and cities grow faster than vaults.
💰 The $5 Trillion Prediction
Wu then went on to discuss how far the cryptocurrency business may expand in 2022:
I think when I come back in 2022, the asset class, which is roughly about 2.3 to 2.5 trillion [dollars], we’ll be talking about [how] the biggest story in 2022 is how the crypto asset class doubled and went to five trillion and it’s going probably be the only asset class that could withstand the headwind from the macro factors of Fed tightening and geopolitical issues that are out there.
That prediction has two parts. The first is measurement: the crypto market was sitting at roughly $2.3 to $2.5 trillion when he spoke, so $5 trillion means doubling in a single year. The second is the contrarian claim: crypto would be the only asset class that could shrug off the Fed’s tightening cycle, which markets were already nervous about.
And here is the part that separates his take from the usual cheerleading:
And I think the reason is very simple because from where I sit, what I see is basically a massive inflow of talent, capital, and usage and listen, I’m almost embarrassed to say that that’s a prediction because I’m just reporting what I see on a daily basis.
“Almost embarrassed to say that’s a prediction, because I’m just reporting what I see.” That is the most interesting line of the whole interview. He is not predicting a number; he is extrapolating a trend he watches from the inside: talent, capital, and usage all flowing into the space.
🧠 Final Thoughts
Will the market cap double in 2022? That depends on the Fed, the macro winds, and whether the flow of talent and capital continues at the same rate. Nobody knows, and Wu would be the first to admit the number is a directional bet, not a guarantee.
But the underlying observation is solid: when builders keep building through the price noise, the asset class tends to grow. Whether it hits five trillion or stops at three, the direction is what matters, and the people on the inside all seem to agree on it. Thanks for reading.
